How to Make a Slipcover
I thought I should take a little time to show you how to make your own slipcovers. A lot of people don't realize how easy this can be to do. Typically this is something that is completely unnecessary because there is already a wide selection of covers that you can find at stores and they're generally pretty inexpensive, so most people don't have to go this far. But if you can't find something that meets your needs than you can always sit down and create your own. It might seem a little difficult for the average person to do, but it isn't that bad. People that have sewn their own clothes that all of this is a matter of getting proper measurements. First Step: Measure Everything You're going to want to get an accurate measurement of all parts of the chair. You're going to need to get the back of it and the width. Typically the front of the chair is two times the back of the chair. That is just due to the bends in the chair. The width is easy to measure, but coming up with an accurate amount for the sides can be a little different. Typically width plus two times the height works. This should give you a decent sized area of fabric that you're going to need to fit this on your chair. Whatever the value you come up with, buy double the fabric. You never know what kind of mistakes you might make with the fabric and you could of very easily made a mistake with the measuring. Second Step: Drape the Fabric Over the Chair At this point you're just going to throw the fabric over the chair and just start trying to get it to fit. Typically you won't want to get the chair right in the middle of the fabric because that isn't an efficient way for cutting the fabric. You're going to have to align one end of the fabric to one end of the chair. The easiest way to do this is starting with the back. You want the fabric to drape down the back and come right to the bottom of the chair. Give it an extra inch at the bottom and pin the fabric in place at the top of the back. Next you're going to want to tighten the fabric around the front groves on the front of the chair. Take your time with this part of the measuring. You want to make sure that you get this area right because this is the part of the chair that everyone is going to see. Make sure things are tight enough where you don't end up seeing wrinkles and things like that. Pin things in as you get them to fit properly. You keep pinning everything until you get down to the very bottom of the chair and have it fitting properly too. Third Step: Sew it all Together At this point you should have a great looking slipcover on your chair. It should look great and exactly how it would look when it is completed. The only difference is that you have a lot of extra fabric and it is being held together completely by the pins. All you have to do is sew everything together piece by piece and you should be left with one piece of fabric. All you have to do is slide the new fabric over the chair (like a slipcover) and you're done.
