I thought I should spend a little time on taking care of your outdoor furniture because I know a lot of you have this sort of thing. Normally if you buy furniture that is completely designed for outdoor living than you don't have much to do for care because the fabric is water resistant. You just have to wait for things to dry up before you use them. Items that are made out of wood can be a little more difficult to care for because of the vast variety of different types of it. You have to remember that with the right care and maintenance you should be able to extend the life of this outdoor furniture for many more years. And with the cost of wood furniture, it is a small investment to get more years.

Now it is important to point out that there is a lot of different wood and all of them have their own characteristics. Teak has been proven to be a very durable and long lasting type of wood. It is far more expensive than other types, but it is definitely worth it for furniture. It is a type of wood that is honey colored and very dense. It is actually quite hard to find furniture made out of this type of wood because of the much longer growing times for this particular type of tree.

With teak you don't really have to clean the furniture because it is so durable, but it is important to clean all other types of wood. The reason that you should be doing this is that you do tend to get a build up of pollen, sap and other mildew on it. You do this just like you do any other cleaning by using your hands and scrubbing it. Don't scrub too hard though because you could cause the finish to come off.

As for what you should be cleaning it with, I would suggest a mixture of dishwashing liquid, water and a little bit of bleach. When it comes to the bleach only have a tiny amount of this. Roughly one tablespoon per gallon of water. Using a cloth will work just fine for most people, but you can always use a brush. If you do use a brush make sure that it is soft bristled or you're going to take the finish off.

Lastly, when it comes to wood furniture you have to always be protecting it against any sort of water damage. If any of the moisture gets into the wood it will cause swelling, rotting, decay, mold, etc. This is why your wood should come with some sort of finish on it because that finish should be a waterproofing agent. The problem is that over time you experience a weakening in the actual finish. This is most apparent down by the bottom of the legs since they're constantly getting slid around and touching the wet ground.

If this is the case you should always have some stain around your garage. It's not that big of a deal to do. Basically when you're taking in your furniture for the winter, just put a coat of stain on it to protect it and it should be all set for spring when you take the furniture back out.
